It's a difficult time to not be that keen on pistachios

It really is. I loved that book, partly because in places she's quite provocative. Interesting to find that a lot of people I recommended it to struggled with that and how there isn't an easy redemptive arc in it.

This is one thing I really liked about Sally Husband's Sea Bean - nature isn't a cure, it isn't redemptive, it's not always even accessible, but it's a point of focus

The internet has encouraged us to expect free content, or to blatantly steal content which I suppose is a sort of democratisation but not an improvement

I think the systemic problem goes far beyond publishing in that generally we value celebrity over content, and are specifically continuing to devalue content and the work that goes into making it.

If thereโ€™s one thing people need to understand about Ai itโ€™s this ๐Ÿ‘‡

Itโ€™s not a search engine. Itโ€™s (probably) not giving you an extract pulled directly from an existing page. It is INVENTING text based on training data.

You can trust it as much as you can trust any piece of fiction.

In my 20s this would have been unimaginable, in my 30s a major crisis, fresh into my 50s it's marginally worse than last week which had its own crop of bad news. Was I just not paying attention to what was going on with middle aged people when I was younger? This sucks

29.07.2025 14:10 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Having such a middle aged week. Friend diagnosed with breast cancer, uncle died, work performance review, blood tests, mother not feeling very well and needing help, short-staffed at work so no wriggle room for dealing with any of this & lots of unexpected travel to cover in other places.

Gah. Language might change but using print to vaguely mean artwork of many types feels like an unpleasant mix of ignorance and effort to devalue what artists do.

And also maybe make sure your teens aren't the kids who think it's okay to run up to people and scream obscenities into their faces because they think it's fun.

26.07.2025 13:43 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Or they they think it's okay to call you a dumb bitch because you don't sell something they want, or they're personally and endlessly outraged at having to pay for carrier bags. Your kids are looking for a 1st job? Really think about which businesses will help them get experience & feel safe

26.07.2025 13:43 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Customers can be unbelievably rude, aggressive, abusive, & just generally difficult. It's not everybody but it's everyday & most retailers have cut staffing to the bone so there's not necessarily anyone to support those kids when some man decides to be inappropriate

Young people at Latitude explain how hard it is to get a job Young people at Latitude explain how hard it is for their generation to get a part-time job.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... in the middle of summer holiday season in a busy city centre shop so 2 things come to mind here, 1 - retail and hospitality are harder work & more mentally demanding than you might imagine, 2 - it's not a great environment for 16 year olds.

26.07.2025 13:43 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Book selling problems - genre isn't a reflection on quality and the concept of literary fiction isn't really informative on content. God forbid a successful writer wants to explore different genres, & all exacerbated by a generation that's grown up browsing by tags

This won't make you feel better, but had a mini argument with my manager yesterday about what should go in horror. They don't think Maria Enriquez belongs there because of the booker short listing, but we really shouldn't be defining a books genre by the perceived quality of the writing

This bit. This bit right here.

No, assholes, you do not have the right to take anything you can find on the internet and use it to feed your plagiarism machines.

Another reason to be grateful we're living in the EU.

The comparison to Finding Hildasay is interesting, I don't doubt that the success of The Salt Path made that book more likely, but he already had a sizable following on social media who had followed his walk which is it's own different route onto shelves, as well as a sort of check on credentials
