At an academic conference and the most common conversations I've had is stuff like, "How many faculty is your school trying to fire? Do you still have professional development funds? Do you still have an English department?" Fun times!

DHS’s Kristi Noem targets country singer over song with lyrics about ICE When the federal government, including the White House, starts leaning on artists over song lyrics, there’s a problem.

When powerful federal officials, including those at the White House, start leaning on artists over song lyrics, there’s a problem.

The scope of Team Trump’s efforts to steer the culture make that problem worse. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

"Extremely disturbing": What does Trump's "antifa" executive order actually do? "The national security state is a wonderful tool for a skilled authoritarian to crush American democracy."

There’s very little question at this point that Trump is an authoritarian—the question is, how skilled is he?

Hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees drop off the grid after leaving site As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined by the Miami Herald.

More than 1800 detainees are missing after the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Their families and lawyers can’t find them and they’ve vanished from the ICE database. Feels like this should be a much bigger story www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...

This is personally upsetting. Not just because it's NASA but also because I was a contractor at Goddard for many years, and the "get it done" atmosphere was amazing. We knew what we were involved in and was a really great part of the work.

It’s because people are pissed. That energy is palpable everywhere I go.

There are many problems with this statement, but Klein’s fundamental error reveals something much more dangerous: he’s mistaking performance for discourse, spectacle for persuasion. Kirk wasn’t showing up to campuses to “talk with anyone who would talk to him.” He was showing up armed with a string of logical fallacies, nonsense talking points, and gotcha questions specifically designed to enrage inexperienced college students so he could generate viral social media clips of himself “owning the libs.”

It's wild to me how ostensibly smart people cannot/could not/will not see what is so obvious.

@mmasnick.bsky.social nails it. And my hunch is we'd be a better society if the Very Serious People with the Very Serious Ideas opened their fucking eyes.
