Incredible to watch a pod of Orcas encircling a Harbour Seal that was hauled out atop a raft of kelp. Even more incredible to see a Humpback Whale repeatedly defending the seal. Fascinating altruistic behaviour! Yesterday in the Salish Sea, guiding for RPBO & @eaglewingtours.bsky.social. #MarineLife

Not so much a National Park - more of a National Disgrace.

Earthshot prize: Prince William to travel to Brazil for awards ceremony Fifteen projects are shortlisted for a chance of winning the top Β£1m prizes at next month's environmental awards ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.

Hypocrite. And this constant, steady stream of fawning BBC articles about the royals is nauseating. Strange they no longer publicise his annual grouse shooting trip to Northumberland with son George. Doesn't quite fit the narrative, eh? The times they are a changing.

More information about the suspicious disappearance of Hen Harrier β€˜Sita’ who vanished on a grouse moor in Yorkshire Dales National Park In May this year I blogged about a young satellite-tagged Hen Harrier named β€˜Sita’ who had disappeared under suspicious circumstances from a winter roost site on an unnamed grouse moor …

New info from RSPB reveals last known location of this young Hen Harrier was on a grouse moor between Reeth & Redmire on NE side of Yorkshire Dales National Park, before she disappeared in suspicious circumstances.

After the thrill of reaching the million, we went straight to the peak of diversity. The challenge of counting high numbers of birds slowly shifted into identifying the (relatively) fewer but more difficult ones: the large eagle species!

But they also brought a special guest along...πŸ‘‡

Peak District's unique Mountain Hare population endures steep decline New research reveals a nearly 60% decline in Mountain Hare numbers in the Peak District since 2017, with the population now only at some 1,000 individuals. Density in key hot-spots has dropped from around 15 to 6 hares per square kilometre. Factors include climate-driven coat-colour mismatch, disease, land management, and disturbed habitats. Natural England warns that this iconic upland species may be at risk unless conservation action is strengthened.

England's only population of Mountain Hares in the Peak District has suffered a dramatic decline over the past eight years, according to research by Natural England:

The prevalence of a disease is generally linked to the density of the host. Artificially high densities will increase prevalence even when the agent is not transmitted directly between susceptible hosts. In short, the narrow & selfish interests of the shooting lobby put the public health at risk.

Another recent paper in #BirdStudy showed autumn densities of Pheasant & Red-Legged Partridge in southern England can be an astonishing 2,500 birds per km2 on land near releases. After winter, there were still up to 700 birds/km2. That's huge numbers.
