A poem written several years ago by my daughter, in response to 'missing' Golden Eagles Adam and Charlie. The picture also shows a newplast model of a dead eagle. The persecution of our raptors in the UK continues unabated.

My daughter could hazard a guess.

Peak District's unique Mountain Hare population endures steep decline New research reveals a nearly 60% decline in Mountain Hare numbers in the Peak District since 2017, with the population now only at some 1,000 individuals. Density in key hot-spots has dropped from around 15 to 6 hares per square kilometre. Factors include climate-driven coat-colour mismatch, disease, land management, and disturbed habitats. Natural England warns that this iconic upland species may be at risk unless conservation action is strengthened.

England's only population of Mountain Hares in the Peak District has suffered a dramatic decline over the past eight years, according to research by Natural England:

The prevalence of a disease is generally linked to the density of the host. Artificially high densities will increase prevalence even when the agent is not transmitted directly between susceptible hosts. In short, the narrow & selfish interests of the shooting lobby put the public health at risk.

Another recent paper in #BirdStudy showed autumn densities of Pheasant & Red-Legged Partridge in southern England can be an astonishing 2,500 birds per km2 on land near releases. After winter, there were still up to 700 birds/km2. That's huge numbers.
