Al and I are on a late anniversary kid free weekend away. We have somehow ended up in the same hotel as Novacon......

I've probably suggested before moving it to a RPi running a sensible operating system :-)

There are a whole load of basic questions, to which I suspect the answers are mostly 'because it is what you have'. I'm guessing, from what you are trying to do, that this is an old windows laptop?

Have you found the scary radio tower?

Nice, Czech beers (from the naming convention). Work through them all but personally I really like the dark lagers. Where are you staying?

Well the length of a word is processor dependent while a character is encoding dependent. So given an 8 bit processor handling utf-8 there are 1-4 words to a chatacter (sort of)....

Well if it lost money then it was due to a failure of financial modelling. I've not run anything that big but for smaller events people usually massively underestimate the cost of running a thing (especially the customers) and therefore set/expect far to low prices.

We had 4/5 alien heads made for a, rather good, Aliens vs Predator game we ran back around 1991/92. I was sent this badly scanned, creature/organiser crew photo a little while back

I moved to Manchester a few years later(1990) and spent a lot of time in the pubs and curry houses of the area (though there were a couple of 'locals only' pubs). Fortuately my favourite curry/kebab house from the '90s now has a second location close to where I now live in Bolton.

Paranoid - You are organising a Black Sabbath reunion concert in Alpha Complex (someone must have run this at some point)

IIRC @basicbrewing.bsky.social did a load of all rye malt beers a while back.

Setting up a Killer game in Manchester was the cause of a 'Burger Bar Gun Scare' headline in the local news.

Depends on the bus, with a serial bus you can only get him on one bit at a time.

Taking a tour of the world's largest permanent LARPing town The DuchΓ© de Bicolline is a permanent LARPing (Live Action Roleplaying) village in Quebec, Canada. There are hundreds of wooden structures, tent villages, a fort, and a battlefield. Because cellphones...

There's already this is Canada (boingboing.net/2023/02/14/t...) and a site has just been bought in the UK for building something on the same sort of lines.

Big barley wine brewday over the weekend, most of a sack of malt, over 200g of hops and a load of cells of yeast....
Yes, it's that barley wine, for those of you with long memories.

Flea & Firkin in Manchester and occasionally the Phoenix in Denmark Hill for me. It was famous from student pub crawls in the early '90s where we 'could remember everything before the Dogbolter'.
A lovely ex-Firkin brewer recreated a keg of it for my last birthday party.

Base 6 was fairly common and made sense for people who could do pre-decimalisation maths in their heads easily. But who on earth came up with base seven?
