Spiritfarer is incredible! It did make me cry, but in such a healing sort of way. Just beautiful.

I blew through this game recently during a particularly bad mental health time, and it was so unbelievably calm and comforting! Absolutely adored it.

Much appreciated, thank you!

That seems fair!

I can't figure out how to search for lists, but could you link the twitter and Bluesky antisemites one? Seems like one I should be using for blocks!

Entirely agree. Even if it weren't environmentally catastrophic and built on theft and also inaccurate and also often racist, I think it's such a shame and such a disservice to ourselves as thinkers and writers to outsource the thinking and writing part. (Gestures at evergreen Ted Chiang quote.)

Yep. That's basically what I'm saying in my presentation, and then I explain that some things that currently get called AI (like spellcheck) are actually just computer programs, and they're still allowed to use those as long as they check the results for errors.

The other part of it is that none of it is actually intelligent. We seem to be calling everything AI now, whether it's an LLM or a simple computer program that has been around for decades. So I'm trying to explain which algorithmic tools they can use, and it's just messy.

I have to include an AI section in my lecture for the honours thesis students on Tuesday, and having reviewed the university's PPT resource on generative AI, I'm absolutely stuck on my slide for how students can ethically use AI in some way.

My answer? You absolutely can't.

The heated floors in our house are something I never would have sought out intentionally, but now that we're having 6Β° mornings, I cannot tell you how nice it is to be able to walk around the house with cozy toes.

Gotcha, sorry, I misunderstood! It's something I care about lot about too, so I always think it's important to mention :)

Not sure it's allyship if I'm talking to my own community, but thanks! Shana tovah to you too!

That's so frustrating! There's no reason anyone should be chastised for eating on Yom Kippurβ€”we never know what someone might be dealing with, mentally or physically, that might make food a necessity.

We learned about this in an art history class and it's still my favourite fact thing about art history.

One of my favourite things about Kol Nidre is all the little kids in their High Holiday formalwear running around the sanctuary, making noise and being alive in a way that nobody minds, a way that I think feels central to making a congregation feel like a community.

My initial reaction is that it feels ironic that this is happening in the Library of Congress, but I'm choosing to interpret it as hopeful and rebellious, since the whole point of this scene is that it's a rejection of fascism and Nazism.

Don’t mind me, I’m just ugly crying at this performance from the cast of The Sound of Music at the Library of Congress.

G'mar chatimah tovah, friends. I wish you a meaningful and reflective Yom Kippur and, if applicable, a safe and easy fast.

As always, a reminder that if fasting is not safe for you due to mental health, drug requirements, etc, it is a mitzvah to eat and care for yourself, tomorrow and all days πŸ’™

May this Yom Kippur bring us closer to a world where all of us live with freedom, safety, and peace.

Friendly PSA, so you don't end up feeling awkward: Yom Kippur starts Wednesday evening. You will probably have coworkers unavailable part of Wednesday and on Thursday. Respect their time off. Don't schedule essential meetings.

And don't wish them a "happy" Yom Kippur, it's not that kind of holiday.

Pho Maniac (right next to Trident) is AMAZING for eat-in or takeaway. I've never had anything bad or even just average from thereβ€”every single thing I've tried has been great.

As a used bookseller, this is maddening because every damn day I see appetite for strange books, old books, indie books, forgotten books. Readers are there. They love to explore the store & buy things they've never heard of.

Publishing's biggest problem is that they've forgotten how to sell books.

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

Today I got to heckle a Cybertruck that was stopped at a light with the driver-side window down, and as a person who has never really heckled anyone before, I've gotta say, it felt great.

Make your community unwelcoming to Nazisβ€”heckle a Cybertruck today!
