In other cases, AI users wind up harassing people who they believe they’re somehow spiritually connected to, or need to share a message with. Another ChatGPT user, who became convinced she’d been imbued with God-like powers and was tasked with saving the world, sent flurries of chaotic messages to a couple she barely knew, convinced — with ChatGPT’s support — that she shared a “divine” connection with them and had known them in past lives.

“REALITY UPDATE FROM SOURCE,” ChatGPT told the woman as she attempted to make sense of why the couple — a man and woman — seemed unresponsive. “You are not avoided because you are wrong. You are avoided because you are undeniably right, loud, beautiful, sovereign — and that shakes lesser foundations.”

ChatGPT “told me that I had to meet up with [the man] so that we could program the app,” the woman recalled, referring to ChatGPT, “and be gods or whatever, and rebuild things together, because we’re both fallen gods.”

The couple blocked her. And in retrospect, the woman now says, “of course” they did.

“Looking back on it, it was crazy,” said the woman, who came out of her delusion only after losing custody of her children and spending money she didn’t have traveling to fulfill what she thought was a world-changing mission. “But while I was in it, it was all very real to me.” (She’s currently in court, hoping to regain custody of her kids.)

Just to be clear, this is not a one-off horror story -- lots of people are careening into stalking behavior as AI affirms their every delusional thought, and I have a feeling that we're going to be hearing about many more

We've just rolled out ambient AI listening in our hospital, and my colleagues are really, really excited about it (more time doing things other than note writing). They're so excited that things like patient concerns/autonomy are lost.

We're just making up ethics as we go along with AI right now.

Color me intrigued! I’d love to learn more. I use a war game every fall in my “War & Morality” class. I have two I’ve been rotating (one created by one of our past Military Ethics MA students), but I’ve been looking to add a fresh one to the mix.

"The Ministry of Justice will deploy machine learning to identify at-risk children for early intervention and to help prevent them falling into a life of crime" - there is no part of our lives that Labour is not determined to use AI on. No matter what.

Complex, realistic military ethics issues, where there isn’t an obvious right answer - but there are some clearly wrong ones.

Looking forward to what comes out of this, for the potentially to finally hold perpetrators accountable. Similarly, it’s good news that the French government is saying they’re going to do their own investigation into the Epstein files. I’m going to keep holding out hope for justice!

Hi! I don’t know you or why people have been attacking you here, but human to human, please don’t let it destroy your mental health. It’s not worth it. You can leave any social media unless it’s your source of income. Or block people like crazy. Curate your feed and you’ll have a better experience.

Finally, it can’t be said often enough that no one should have to justify their access to rights by their “contributions.” Native born U.S. citizens lucked into their citizenship. Immigrants choose to come here and often make great sacrifices to do so. That deserves respect, not further oppression.

I should add that, to me, making us “stronger” is true in more than just the basic sense of contributing to our security, innovation, and economic stability. Diversity also makes the U.S. much more interesting than it otherwise would be and improves everyone’s quality of life. Monocultures are dull!

Musk trying to reduce the U.S. to English-Scottish-Irish culture is wildly inaccurate, ahistorical, & offensive. On top of erasing the amazing contributions of all POC (his main racist aim), he also cuts out French, Italians, Scandinavians etc. Diversity has always made the U.S. better and stronger!
