They just didn’t get it. I don’t think they ever did, because they never talked about politics.

The last stanza of that song, god damn:

I didn’t listen to RATM when they were originally around because the potheads I wasted my time with would play the S/T all the time. The music was fine, but I notes to them “are you listening to the lyrics”? I was, because my love of writing lyrics and political fire stoked in me from Dead Kennedys.

Fine with it, and understood it, along with “Sword of Damocles”, which came from one of his favorite stories. The end of “What’s Good” hits like a ton of bricks:

But not fair at all”.

I lost my father in law on 1/8 to cancer, from his second bout with cancer. The second round was faster moving. I sent him a copy of the song, as he was a fan of VU in the 1960’s and actually saw them once in concert. I was worried about my MIL’s sensitives to art that may offend her, but he…

“What’s Good” definitely makes you think about the absurdities of life, but understanding the difficulties of losing that person in your life to cancer. I didn’t understand the song as much in 1992, at 17. Now, hitting 50 this year, it definitely resonates…
