If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, a text to your wife, I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.

Last month, I had the honor of giving the @jcms-eu.bsky.social Annual Lecture at @ces-europe.bsky.social in Philadelphia. I spoke about the geopolitical uncertainty ๐ช๐บ faces from ๐บ๐ธ, ๐ท๐บ, & ๐จ๐ณ, & how this poses 3 crises ๐ช๐บ must respond to with more leadership & deeper integration.

Pathetic!

Our final day of the American Political Economy research conference, with a fantastic lineup of roundtable speakers on the US in international perspective -- @himself.bsky.social, @benbraun.bsky.social, Aditi Sahasrabuddhe, and Mark Schwartz -- followed by a paper panel.โ

Totally onboard with this framing. As Van Jackson and others have argued - the US is both a hegemon and a preeminent revisionist power .. just one ruled by imbeciles lashing out at enemies theyโve conjured up in group chats. If you assume US exceptionalism then obv this is hard to believe.
29.07.2025 21:55 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This is a *very* good discussion of the end of U.S. hegemony (aka international leadership) from @delong.socialโฆ so good that Iโll forgive him for not including anything that @cooleyoneurasia.bsky.social & I have written on the subject.
Go read.
I am increasingly convinced that the economic impact of tariffs is most likely to show up as a fall in business profits, a collapse investment spending, and a recession - deflation, not inflation.
29.07.2025 14:20 โ ๐ 112 ๐ 22 ๐ฌ 21 ๐ 7Mark Carney wants economic growth at any cost. To achieve it, heโs going after tech investment and pushing hard for AI adoption.
In the process, AI regulations are being thrown on the bonfire and tech harms are an afterthought. Itโs a recipe for disaster.
Very excited to announce this discussion with some amazing people about the interactions of the dollar, US foreign and fiscal policy, RoW responses, and a great many other things next week! (also, see pinned post). jainfamilyinstitute.org/monetizing-p...

So the deal is done (and Mark can continue to wear his shirt): the US will impose a 15% US baseline tariff, 232 on steel and aluminum, the EU commits to invest and buy energy and military stuff from the US. What does it all mean?

Again, staggering how this has been normalized. "WTO" doesn't even appear in the article. Not a single sentence noting how this is all wildly illegal under both US domestic law & WTO treaty obligations.
Why did the EU succumb? Also this: bsky.app/profile/mcop...
All of these people need to be sent to the hague.

The Trumpists didnโt depart from a previously stable democratic consensus. They represent the radical wing of a rightwing coalition that was never on board with egalitarian principles and democratic pluralism to begin with.
