If you're using AI to write essays, eulogies, a text to your wife, I do think less of you as a person. Ceding your mental and creative abilities to a machine is an embarrassing thing and people should be ashamed to admit doing it in public.

Totally onboard with this framing. As Van Jackson and others have argued - the US is both a hegemon and a preeminent revisionist power .. just one ruled by imbeciles lashing out at enemies theyโ€™ve conjured up in group chats. If you assume US exceptionalism then obv this is hard to believe.

A Note on the Closing of the Path to Future U.S. Hegemonyโ€”Economic, Political, Geostrategic, Cultural From hegemon to has-been, remarkably quickly too. But think, post American hegemony, not Chinese hegemony but rather (hopefully peaceful) balance-of-power, and of influence, global politics...

This is a *very* good discussion of the end of U.S. hegemony (aka international leadership) from @delong.socialโ€ฆ so good that Iโ€™ll forgive him for not including anything that @cooleyoneurasia.bsky.social & I have written on the subject.

Go read.

I am increasingly convinced that the economic impact of tariffs is most likely to show up as a fall in business profits, a collapse investment spending, and a recession - deflation, not inflation.

Mark Carney is going โ€œelbows downโ€ against Big Tech Canadaโ€™s AI agenda ignores potential harms in the hope of short-term economic gain

Mark Carney wants economic growth at any cost. To achieve it, heโ€™s going after tech investment and pushing hard for AI adoption.

In the process, AI regulations are being thrown on the bonfire and tech harms are an afterthought. Itโ€™s a recipe for disaster.

4/ Accepting Trumps deal, could Europe have exercised more power? Lacking energy, unified fiscal-monetary power & army, It remains trapped in a Permanent Suez...

Our paper on EU's 'Permanent Suez' and quest for sovereignty is here: atlanticcouncil.org/wp-content/u...

So the deal is done (and Mark can continue to wear his shirt): the US will impose a 15% US baseline tariff, 232 on steel and aluminum, the EU commits to invest and buy energy and military stuff from the US. What does it all mean?

27.07.2025 18:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 81    ๐Ÿ” 14    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 5    ๐Ÿ“Œ 5

Two ways: gradually, then suddenly

Again, staggering how this has been normalized. "WTO" doesn't even appear in the article. Not a single sentence noting how this is all wildly illegal under both US domestic law & WTO treaty obligations.

Why did the EU succumb? Also this: bsky.app/profile/mcop...

The shift from pensions to 401ks played a big role in fueling Americans' hesitance to tax big wealth. Because now, even Americans who have only a tiny retirement account feel invested in the success of an institution that overwhelmingly benefits those much wealthier than them.

This stuff is all awful, but far & away the most important capitulation to date is the total Article I failure/crisis. Congress has done nothing as a runaway Mad King has stolen its power of the purse & closed down entire portions of the government it created by law. All of ๐Ÿ‘‡ is secondary to that.

The Trumpists didnโ€™t depart from a previously stable democratic consensus. They represent the radical wing of a rightwing coalition that was never on board with egalitarian principles and democratic pluralism to begin with.
