Good vibes at the Vezneciler metro station in Istanbul just before today's demonstration in Sarachane.

It will be an intense weekend in Turkey as hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets to protest the detention of İmamoğlu. Surprisingly, demonstrations are also taking place in AKP strongholds like Konya and Urfa.

Happening now: Dilek Imamoglu, wife of Ekrem Imamoglu, the Istanbul mayor, awakened this morning by a police raid and then detained, speaks to crowds gathering at Istanbul's municipality. Today, "we were all arrested," she yells out, as crowds shout slogans, this as protests were declared banned.

Meanwhile markets reacts to İmamoğlu’s detention:

- Turkish lira hits record low, dropping up to 14.5%
- BIST 100 index & banking stocks plunge
- Investors fear political instability & economic uncertainty

CHP’s chairman, Özgür Özel, denounced Imamoğlu’s detention as a “coup”.

“Currently, there is a power in place to prevent the nation from determining the next president,” he said. “We are facing an attempted coup against our next president.”
