Pre- and postantibiotic epoch: The historical spread of antimicrobial resistance
Plasmids are now the primary vectors of antimicrobial resistance, but our understanding of how human industrialisation of antibiotics influenced their evolution is limited by a paucity of data predati...
Imagine we could travel back in time βͺβοΈto explore the world of bacterial pathogens before humans discovered and industrialised antibiotics

Multi-armed bandit - Wikipedia
Science is fun, but the history of science is even...funner!
-Originally considered by Allied scientists in World War II, it proved so intractable that...the problem was proposed to be dropped over Germany so that German scientists could also waste their time on it

Giant DNA viruses encode a hallmark translation initiation complex of eukaryotic life
In contrast to living organisms, viruses were long thought to lack protein synthesis machinery and instead depend on host factors to translate viral transcripts. Here, we discover that giant DNA virus...
Historically, viruses were thought to primarily use host cell's translational machinery. New work from @harvardcellbio.bsky.social faculty Amy Lee reveals that a giant DNA virus encodes its own IF4F initiation complex, suggesting an unexpected evolutionary innovation. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Honest question Emily: if funding were restored in 3.5 years (huge if), how long do you think it would take for institutions like IPAM to recover their pipeline of talent and work.
Iβm thinking about the converse: how are other nations going to fill this void?

Non-antibiotics disrupt colonization resistance against enteropathogens - Nature
Non-antibiotic drugs from a wide range of therapeutic classes can alter the ability of gut commensals to resist invasion by enteropathogens, a previously underappreciated side effect of such drugs.

Super interesting field of workβ¦though the converse question of how antibiotic-mediated perturbations of the microbiome influence cancer risk, is just as, if not more, important from a risk standpoint. Easier to modify antibiotic exposures.

RFK Jr. says US wonβt donate to global vaccine effort
Kennedy ripped into Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, in a video address at its pledging summit.
This is a travesty & a nightmare. The US was a founder of @gavi.org. It lowers global vaccine costs, has vaccinated 1B children, & averted 19M deaths. This pull out will cost 100s of thousands of children's lives a year - and RFK Jr will be personally responsible.
