Yeah I write lots of snippets and what if's to figure things out and get to know the characters. I have a habit of getting a way into things and having a big revelation about a character and being like 'oh no, this changes everything!' but when I read back I realise.. it was kind of there all along!

Andy's self-esteem is better than before, but as an autistic he over-thinks

Iori knows they're unreliable, they don't now apologise for it but they try and compensate

Paige is a people pleaser, she thinks that's a good thing

Matthew has a take me or leave me attitude but can faun when he needs to

For me it comes up as I write. They'll react to something in an unexpected way and I'll dig and find an experience in their past that shaped this response. Sometimes I'll change the current situation to get the reaction I needed, but the past experience will still inform my writing going forward

Andy and Iori are 100% human, as far as they know. They have friends of different species.

Paige pretends she is, but she's sea folk, specifically nataterran.

Matthew is terranan and works with many types of folk.

Blake is a changeling, Charlie is a vampire, Fran is a werewolf, Peader is a faun.

We hear about Blake before we meet them, and it's none too flattering. They're a nightmare boss, an entitled celebrity, with no care for anyone other than themselves.

My Big Bad is still in development, but Blake is the first 'baddie'. They're a morally grey, complicated asshole who's all bravado.

Blake is not an easy person to get along with. They think a hell of a lot of themselves, they're rude and entitled. Also, Matthew gets so caught up in solving the problem that he doesn't stop to think about the wider applications of his investigations if they fell into the wrong hands

That's what Matthew is trying to find out. They did recently have surgery and the issues happened immediately after, so that's their starting point.

Andy's boss Blake is a shapeshifting faerie who's losing their magic. Andy's flatmate Iori's best friend Paige's brother Matthew is a frog person researcher specialising in humanoid biology and magic. Introducing the two seemed like a beneficial idea for both parties, at first...

Andy lives with Iori so we see them first. They are very close, not as close as Iori would like them to be.

Paige goes to work and meets the new chef, Asta. She instantly dislikes how proud Asta is of being Sea Folk.

Matthew is fascinated by Blake, the shapeshifting fairy whose magic is failing.

It took me an interesting moment to make the connection

Blake is wealthy enough to afford anything that they want, but they're constantly using their fame to get freebies anyway.

Paige would just pick up more shifts as a bartender.

Asta would sell some of her artistic creations, begrudgingly.

Matthew and Paige go home to their shared parents and hang with their sibling. Their frog grandparents will visit too over the holidays.

As a frog person, Matthew's eyes are golden and he has almost 360 degree vision. He wears contacts in the day, but not at night.

As a shapeshifter, Asta can make her eyes any colour she wants, and she loves to make them change according to her mood.

Our society has universal basic income, so they're never short for the necessities, but could save up for luxuries.

Andy would pick up some freelance copywriting on the side.

Matthew would sell his blood to vampires, he knows enough who'd pay for a fresh meal.

Iori would just sell feet pics.

Andy loves his family but they can be a bit loud and a lot. Both his older sisters have kids and his cousins come for the holidays at his parents' house too. Iori only has their mum in the country, but sometimes they'll visit their dad's family for the holidays. For New Year, they'll chill together.

I never thought I'd be in an Olaf mascot suit and have 5 year olds screaming 'take it off! take it off!' at me, but then this show happened. It was... uncomfortable.

Through work he ends up spending time with people he wouldn't usually, and he gets so caught up in finding a solution to the problem that he doesn't stop to think if he should. But will he realise before it's too late? 🤔

Yeah, Charlie's not too fussed about hiding it. They work with quite a few vampires among humans and other species, it doesn't bother Matthew at all. There's a government program for vampires to access ethically sourced blood, so there's less stigma than there used to be.

Thanks! The idea is that you can assume things in this world are like our world until you're told otherwise. We utilise and have a bit of fun with people's assumptions 🤭

Andy and Iori share a flat and hang out a lot.

Paige shares a small flat with long-time friend Ellie and their tabby named Mog but mostly keep to themselves.

Matthew rents a room from colleague Charlie, who happens to be a vampire.

Asta is staying with family, having recently moved to land.

Andy is lawful good, Iori is chaotic neutral, Asta is chaotic good, Blake is neutral evil. Matthew starts as lawful neutral, moves to neutral evil without realising then probably ends up neutral good. Paige is complicated so I'm unsure, possibly true neutral.

Gas/petrol stations are now recharging stations, although they still have a couple of pumps. They also have showers for frog people to rehydrate and stand-in dryers for sea folk to dry off

Transportation is moving towards mostly electric. Trams and trains are popular as well as buses and cycle lanes.

Big cities also have swim lanes for frog people and sea folk and flight lanes for avi folk, although older parts of the cities or the further out you get, they can suddenly end.
