A hostile environment: language, race, surveillance and the media A hostile environment: language, race, surveillance and the media is the second of two reports analysing parliamentary and media debates from 2010-2024, and shows how large sections of these debates encouraged widespread hostility to migrants.

Our government and media are complicit in enabling racist violence, our latest report shows.

One year since the racist riots broke out across the UK, violence which has continued since, those in power cannot continue to deny their enabling role.

Why don’t we just install AI technology at the supermarket fag counter too? πŸ™„ Although supermarket staff probably have more training and experience than border force. My 30 year old kids still can’t buy alcohol without ID. As you say, very difficult to guess someone’s age.

People have genuine, serious, concerns which need to be recognised and addressed. The problem is they keep being told that these concerns are caused by immigration, and when you are struggling you will take what you can as a reason. This isn't to say people are stupid or racist, just struggling. 1/

The Telegraph recently ran a headline:

"More than one million foreigners claiming benefits."

Sounds shocking, right?

But what does it actually mean?

Let’s have a look!

We don't defeat populists by calling out their lies. We tried that. Facts are complicated, and the audience for populism wants simplicity. It won't work.

We defeat populists by enacting bold political ideas that improve lives for the disenfranchised, and make the world seem less grotesquely unfair.

What to Do When Someone Has a Panic Attack

β€’ Ask if they've considered that in season 6, episode 4 of the Sopranos, an episode of Gilmore Girls is playing on TV.

In S07E17 of Gilmore Girls, Richard is wearing a tracksuit. Lorelai makes a joke about it by implicating a lunch date with Tony Soprano.

β€’ Ask if they realize this means that both the Sopranos and Gilmore Girls exist as television shows in the other's universe.

When the Gilmore Girls watch the Sopranos, they will see themselves.

When Tony Soprano watches Gilmore Girls, he sees himself and his family.

β€’ Like two facing mirrors; Gilmore Girls and Sopranos, a recursion, fractal, etc.

Immigration system statistics, year ending September 2024 Quarterly statistics on people coming to UK, extensions of stay, total in asylum system, irregular migration, citizenship, EUSS, asylum, detentions and returns.

Long thread of initial reflections on today's immigration statistics as I read through them. First off, it would be great if people could remember they are from June, that means that, not matter your political persuasions, they are down to the previous government. 1/

Behind all the immigration statistics are individual people's lives. Drops in "Dependent Visas" mean increases in families and loved ones being separated. When we talk about immigration only in terms of numbers, we ignore the people, and their experiences, behind them.

Rise in visa salary threshold for skilled workers to Β£38,700 'to cost Britain Β£25bn' The Oxford Migration Observatory highlighted the predicted huge bill from the controversial visa reform

When you make it harder for people to get visas, work and live in a place you don't only harm the individual. When you push policies which affect people in your communities the whole community suffers. It goes the same for the country as a whole.

Firms illegally employing workers in UK face 'stronger' action, says Yvette Cooper The Home Secretary admitted some of the pull-factors attracting people to risk their lives crossing the Channel in β€˜small boats’ needed to be tackled

It would be great if, just for once, we had a government focused more on protecting people than enforcement. These "crackdowns" have minimal overall impact on majority of businesses affected. They specifically hit workers, who often are already being exploited 1/6
