Been asking the community garden for years for a giant tarp to smother an unused hillside full of weeds and eventually create a community food source/native plant garden. Wouldn’t you know I found one hidden at the bottom of the hillside under years (decades?) of debris?! The universe provides…

Common milkweed 6/17/24. This early bloomer attracts pollinators to some earlier flowering plants like currants. Very disappointed that after 7 years of growing it and managing it, our community garden organization, Capital Roots, is not allowing us gardeners to have it in our plots anymore.

Anise hyssop, swamp milkweed, yellow giant hyssop, and a monarch from the anti lawn front garden on 8/4/24. Monarchs are endangered and giant hyssop is listed as threatened in NY. Empowering to know that we can be part of the solution. Turn that lawn into a garden!

Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum) in bloom in August. One of my favorites in our anti lawn garden because it blooms for so long and is teeming with life. Highly recommend it! Imagine if we all replaced our lawns with gardens…

One of the best things we did at our house was replace our ugly lawn with native plants. The planet is currently in the sixth great mass extinction because of habitat loss, pesticides and the climate crisis. Native plants help native creatures. No more lawns only gardens!

FOOD IS MEDICINE! In the future, if growing our food requires poisoning people (and creating a giant “dead zone” in the “gulf of America”) then it wont be allowed. Resist industrial ag by growing your own and supporting organic farmers.

Compost on prospective garden bed covered by cardboard then by mulch

Compost on prospective garden bed covered by cardboard then by mulch

Easy no till gardening using sheet mulching:

1. Lay compost on ground/garden bed
2. Cover with cardboard
3. Cover cardboard with mulch
4. Stab a hole and plant the plant start

Soon you will have minimal/no food or cardboard waste! Great for water retention!
