Notice that when the government *actually* wants to get something done, they immediately abandon the "if both sides are mad I must be correct" mentality.
Passing IR reform with the Greens or immigration reforms with the Coalition spring to mind.

This is such a facile approach to policy making. It enables Labor to keep proposing bad legislation on important topics, get nothing done, and then blame everyone else.

I look forward to reading it! Would also be interested in interviewing you on my podcast about it. I mostly interview political theorists. DM me if interested.
23.10.2025 11:54 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's good to have democratically elected politicians as the final decision-makers, they can be held accountable and the buck stops with the minister.
Ultimately they'll be acting on advice, but having one person accountable is preferable to unelected bureaucrats being able to blame one another.
Can't believe that the media is still trying to read the tea leaves and find meaning in Trump's brain farts.
If Trump says he doesn't believe that Xi will invade Taiwan, this isn't a shift in US policy, it's the ramblings of a man who has no idea what he is talking about.

Torn between admiration at how well Albanese's meeting with Trump went, and revulsion at our strategic obsequiousness.
No matter how much Trump praises AUKUS, it's still a rotten deal.

"if elected" is the operative phrase here

Thank you!
For what it's worth, I don't agree with Prof. Xiang. I take a more materialist explanation myself, but it's an interesting book nonetheless. Not least because it highlights differences in "Western" and "Chinese" metaphysics.
Racism, colonialism and slavery β these are not accidents of history, they are the result of a metaphysical worldview peculiar to the Western world.
That is the bold claim made by Prof. Shuchen Xiang, who joined me to discuss her new book, Chinese Cosmopolitanism.

Rawls offers a "...political project centered around the quintessentially liberal principle that all life is equally sacred and deserves to be experienced with dignity."

Some interesting notes in this article, esp. that conflict over Taiwan could spark a regional war. #auspol
