The Neo-Right's Multi-Front Revolt Against America A political theorist traces the intellectual history of the various strains of a movement gone rogue

“Laura K. Field’s ‘Furious Minds: The Making of the MAGA New Right’…is a deeply researched account of the rise of the MAGA New Right during the past two decades braided with the narrative of her break with it.”

Field “offers a lucid analytical template of New Right thought, along with penetrating analyses of some of its major figures such as Patrick Deneen, Yoram Hazony, and Adrian Vermeule.”

I really don't think I went "all anti-intellectual" with this book, though I do complain about their use of abstractions a fair amount!

As a historian, I have been torturing myself by watching some of the series that the White House in cooperation with Hillsdale College produced about American Independence (tellingly, they avoid the word "revolution").

There are so many errors that it is hard to know where to begin. But I'll try

There was civilization in the Americas before the settlers arrived. The other work being performed here is to erase that and present settlement as the arrival of civilization instead of the annihilation of another

The irony of course is that Black Americans are probably far more likely to be descended from people who lived in North America before 1776 than white Americans are.

Neither Trump, nor half of his cabinet have “ancestors” who were in North America before the revolution. I’d guess that less than half of current US citizens do. “Your ancestors” is doing a lot of implicitly white Christian nationalist work here.

Does MAGA Have Ideas? A new book traces the intellectual origins of Trumpism—straight into the void.

The contradictions of the ideas associated with Trumpism reflect a unique disconnect between thinking and reality, Joshua Rothman writes. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/imQD69

Marimar Martinez is a US citizen who was shot by ICE five times in Chicago.

She was then arrested, labelled a “domestic terrorist” and slandered on social media.

All charges against her have been dropped.

In this interview she shows on of the seven holes the ICE agent put in her body.

Dipshit is smashing out a car window with his gun, barrel first. Just rogue, cowboy stiff.

There were two US citizens in the car. They were apprehended and detained for “obstructing” ICE by honking their horn to let people know ICE was in the neighborhood.

This is just in the door after hearing @lkatfield.bsky.social on @bradleyonishi.bsky.social ’s essential SWAJ, and I am already loving it.

I’ve read a lot of “how did we get here” books in the last few years, and the test for me is, does the author see and understand the NAR? Laura Field does!

Behind this important reversal is a member of the Coast Guard who saw what was happening and had the courage to leak it to the press. That person deserves serious praise.

This (unfortunately pricey) volume comes out in a few weeks and despite being years in the making is unexpectedly timely, since the crosscurrents, factions, and continuing rise of the postliberal right are very much part of each day's news.

Text from Kindle: “Deneen's book similarly views the dizzying social, political, and technological changes of recent decades, and all he can see is chaos and instabil-ity. Meanwhile, many of us— especially those whose lives have benefited from progressive social changes-see reconfiguration rather than destruction and wonder when things have actually been better. I often look around today and compare it to the world my grandmothers inhabited, and I can't help but shake my head at men like Bloom and Deneen.”

Liberalism was right to disintegrate certain dimensions of our social life.

Text from Kindle: “
It is easy to see how a person could become captivated by Deneen's sweeping explanation of modern life. There is a good deal of truth to his idea that liberalism-which originated as a mode of politics meant to mediate between conflicting world-views, and to protect individuals' rights and dignity-has had disintegrative effects on some dimensions of modern social life and community, especially if one considers liberal economic policies as part of the ledger.
