Well this is obviously right. And they take up a lot of valuable real estate.

One of the most fascinating things about this is that books have virtually zero actual value. Try selling them. Maybe the reverence with which some people treat them is an antidote. A gesture of respect which secretly acknowledges the horrible truth.
