For sure; every brain is different.

There's a threshold beyond which it's counterproductive for me, but I routinely watch YT videos and listen to audio at 1.5x because I want the information but my internal sense of pace is foot-tappingly impatient.

Heh.

Hmm, I suppose you _could_ skim an audiobook, but it'd be active, like listening to a podcast at 1.5x

Unlike, say, elevator music-ing an audiobook, which'd allow for drifting in and out of attention…

For Tokyu Hands 50th anniversary, illustrator Enya Honami created a new cross-sectional floor guide. Check it out if you’re in Shibuya:

Totally.

It just hadn't occurred to me that partially attentioning an audiobook would be "use". Skim is different, too, like skimming a paper/ebook.

Backgrounding a book at least yields alliteration points.

Tangent, but interest piqued by the verb form of "using" an audiobook.

I rarely _use_ books, with the exception of, say, a pile of books as an improvised laptop stand.

AI coding is an earthquake for software security. Not a tremor. The kind that liquefies the ground beneath your feet. We're mid-shake and most people are still debating if it's real.

Enthusiastically recommend this PZ blog post for anyone pondering tech risk in the real world. It's full of dry understatement like "Gaps in vendors’ understanding of their attack surface is a common source of 0-click vulnerabilities" & spotlights miscellaneous misaligned industry incentives.

I remember being surprised the first time I saw this and wondering if it was a translation choice or if the original used the same term. If the former, I remember fansub vs official sub arguments, so whose subs picked it? And if the latter whether any cultural context makes it less dissonant.

Leaving aside the nice resilience properties of good cloud infra, I agree that _a_ cloud is a diff kind of spof w diff failure modes. Options exist, esp if you're ok with eventual consistency. One Constant Ground Truth is the challenging constraint here, esp if your risk model likes offline copies.

We know that humans are competent at breaking their phones, that in many parts of the world phone theft is a high-volume harm, and old skool threat modeling tells us that Availablity of our data is important, not just Confidentiality and Integrity. Phone-as-ground-truth is a tough sell.

PSA: tips to protect yourself from scams on Signal.

Every major comms platform has to contend w phishing, impersonation, & scams. Sadly.

Signal is major, and as we've grown we've heard about more of these attacks--scammy people pretending to be something or someone to trick and abuse others. 1/

Tough to tell from the photos alone, but the backing blue plastics are different shades, and the screws on one show different corrosion. Wouldn't be surprised if they were made at different times and by different engravers.

Security Community Slams MIT-linked Report Claiming AI Power... Experts push back on new claims about AI-driven ransomware, warning that hype and sponsored research are distorting how the threat is understood.

Last week, MIT released a sketchy, vendor-funded report claiming more than 80% of ransomware was powered by AI. I had a deadline and didn’t get to read it when it first came out.

Now I’ll never get to read it. People pointed out so many methodological problems that they pulled it offline. 1/x

Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

From Seat 1D to CNN: My Viral White House Photo What a last-minute upgrade and a quick instinct taught me about transparency, timing, and the power of noticing.

I didn’t plan to break news. I just looked out the window.

I was flying out of DCA and saw the East Wing being demolished. I took a photo, posted it, and by the time I landed, it was on CNN.

It's wild how fast one moment can move — and how something so ordinary can make the world pay attention.
