finally happened. eye contact with a pleasant person at the grad student and faculty gym. my usual approach is: everyone here is my child. this person did not look young enough to be my child. and yet i asked, are you a professor or a student. they kindly replied, professor. i said me too!

I'm just witnessing this but my neighbor, an immigrant academic on the job market, got a grant that would have got him a job. Then review panels froze and unfroze. He got the grant, hiring resumed. Then his grant and his current supervisor's grant got suspended again. Now they are both off payroll.
