So yes, there are “prompt engineer” titles on the internet. But in real life, at the tech and hacker cons I go to, at the firms that do business with mine, if there are “prompt engineers” no one has that on their business card. Your experience may vary.

We’re just two strangers passing on the internet. I don’t know your experience and you don’t know mine. I DO know that so far no one has figured out how to reduce the cash burn rate to make LLM technology profitable. Half the jobs you posted require python or DevOps skills, not just prompt building.

I mean no insult, but you assume credit when none was given. I’m familiar with the term, and the shameless online certificate/degree programs that sprouted up about two years ago touting the term. I work in the field and I have yet to meet someone who seriously calls themselves a “prompt engineer.”

I was looking for that word, but I couldn’t think of it. Prompt “engineering” is more like learning which sacred chants will get the oracle to change colors or put out a little puff of smoke.

It’s generous to call it “engineering.”

It’s a hard comparison to make because of what the concept of “internet” has become. Today it’s a stand-in for media in general. At its start, it was simply a way for computers to talk to each other over long distances. Our perception of modern AI can’t be separated from the internet hype of it.
