That's the thing, though: The can achieve respect, but they'd need to change their opinions to do it, and they see change as tantamount to defeat, as giving into the shame that's pushing them to change.

They want us to respect their opinions more than we respect facts, and that's not happening.

They want us to respect them and their ideas as equals, they want the recognition.

The problem is, of course, that no smart institution is going to hire someone to teach ecology who thinks climate change is a Chinese hoax.
