When I was younger, I wanted stuff, and it was the stuff that left me fulfilled. These days, it's the simple things. The chance to be close to others. To have a moment or two to be vulnerable with someone I love. It comes so fleetingly, but I treasure the time I get.

I do have a bit of sympathy for the artists who endured, given the larger audiences, but I hope they all realize now that companies run by fascist sympathizers will never have your best interests in mind. A pre-emptive welcome to any who jump ship.

The ultimate review of any published novel is whether the writer's next book will be sought out and/or purchased. Most won't be.

Writing novels is hard. Putting them before the public is hard. Hearing bully criticism is awful. Be a better person and don't do that shit.

This is such a misunderstanding of why writers, artists, and designers do research to begin with, which is to find something unexpected, not capture the average or find reference for the default.

Alternatively, I find that changing the nature of the work can be a refresher in itself. For writing, I might read my own work, or even sit down and enjoy another work to sharpen my skills.

Anyone have their own way of stepping away from things?

Sometimes it's hard to take a break from creative work. Losing that rhythm can feel like you've spun out of bounds.

We all need a refresher, but there's a fine balance to be had between taking one because it's scheduled, and taking one because you need it.
