Depends on the look you're going for. It kinda gives it a "framed" look, like it's a piece of art. If the hard border bothers you, maybe add a third layer in between to blend it, but I like how it looks.

Welcome to the Mine Field. In the first draft, you were dodging speeding debris. But after testing, I found it way too easy to finish unharmed. So I decided it needed to be a little spicier; I switch the rocks with explosive mines.

This one I'm referring to as the "obstacle course." This is another one that wasn't inspired by a specific retro game, but still has the feel of something you might have encountered on an old Atari game.

This level is called "the warp tunnel." You must guide your crystal through the narrow gap, avoiding the sides. If you touch the edges, your crystal takes massive damage.

This level I just though "what if you were just surrounded and ambushed by a fuckton of enemies." I went through several variants of firing sequences in different patterns to make it difficult but still fair.

Next was an homage to one of the most iconic space shooters of all time: Asteroids. I tried to stay true to the original, but I added one additional layer of danger: when the smallest asteroids explode, they shatter into a hail of projectiles.

Next level is up and running, inspired by the classic retro arcade game Centipede.
I'm proud of the way the "Leviathan" breaks into smaller and smaller versions of itself when damaged. That was the most difficult part of the process.

Next is the level inspired by an old favorite, Space Invaders. But like all the levels, instead of just surviving, you must protect your crystal from the enemy horde as they kamikaze towards it once they're close.

The next level was inspired by the classic space shooter Yar's Revenge. There's no actual "yar", but I loved the idea of having to blast your way through a space fortress to get to your objective; the purple crystal shards you need.

Spent the past few days working on the stat/ability upgrades. Once they were included, I immediately built the upgrade menu to test and tweak the variables. There are a total of 24 upgradable stats.
