Two years on from the horrific terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, we remember all the innocent victims whose lives were cruelly stolen by Hamas.

Our thoughts are also with the families whose loved ones were callously murdered, as well as with the hostages who disgracefully remain in captivity and must be released immediately.

October 7 was the single deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust and a profoundly painful experience for London’s Jewish communities. We must never forget this atrocity, nor the deep distress and grief it has caused many Londoners.

As the vile terrorist attack on Heaton Park synagogue in Manchester last Thursday demonstrated, we still have far more to do to tackle the poison of antisemitism and drive it out of our society.

Our Jewish communities must be able to live, work and worship freely – without the fear of harassment, discrimination, intimidation or violence. The fact they are currently unable to shows we must work much harder to stamp out antisemitism wherever it rears its ugly head.

We must never allow conflict overseas to divide us at home. As Mayor, I will continue my work to promote inter-faith dialogue and build bridges between our different religious communities. Whether it’s antisemitism or any other form of bigotry, London has no place for those who seek to sow the seeds of hate.

On this solemn anniversary, we must also acknowledge the suffering and trauma since 7 October 2023. Like so many others, my heart aches for the tens of thousands of innocent civilians in Gaza who have been killed and the families who have been torn apart.

Today, more than ever, I pray that the cycle of terror, killing and bloodshed that has engulfed the region can soon be brought to an end; that the surviving hostages can be set free; that vital humanitarian aid can flow into Gaza; and that Israelis and Palestinians can one day live side-by-side in two states and in peace.

πŸ‘Great to see the positive impact of junk food restrictions - our partner @sustainweb.org's great piece outlines the need for:

πŸ“Clearer guidance

πŸ’ͺStronger enforcement

πŸ‰More visibility of healthier products

'Buy one, get one free' deals for unhealthy food banned in supermarkets - BBC News Crisps, sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks will be covered by restrictions starting in England.

A step towards healthier food environments in England!
Multibuy offers are often not beneficial as they promote unhealthy, rather than healthy, foods, leading families (esp lower income ones) to increased overall spending rather than saving money.

Some good news.

London is meeting legal limits for toxic NO2 pollution for the first time – almost 200 years earlier than predicted – following the Mayor’s "world leading air pollution policies," City Hall announces.

The Ultra Low Emissions Zone - and similar policies - really do work.

New planters looking good at Leigham Avenue / Leigham Court Road junction, Streatham. Campaigned hard to ensure original community ones accidentally removed were replaced by Council. @mmasters21.bsky.social & myself enjoyed helping Father Nature team to plant them up on Friday.

Letter from Julian's Primary School to their neighbours about temporary transport arrangements

Spent an hour this morning with Council's School Street Officer outside Julian's Primary School, Streatham - to see how Council could further support school's efforts to bus pupils to temporary site, and also mitigate disruption to local residents. Useful discussions with Head, inc on coach routes.

The fact they don't have detailed plans. The fact it's ethically repugnant. The fact that it would be an economic disaster.

All of these things are what chaotic authoritarianism looks like. As we're seeing in the US.

Generally 'reducing harm' from tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy food means people buying less. It is not remotely credible to say your business is 'part of the solution'. Turkeys do not vote for Christmas: www.reuters.com/business/hea...

There is a serious failure in UK govt, politics & media to take sufficiently seriously what Musk said & meant with "fight back or die"

= Violence (interethnic civil war) is inevitable so pre-emptive violence - vs migrants, minorities & political opponents - is necessary to avoid existential erasure

I commend my Lambeth councillor colleagues, officers & police for their work to keep people informed about yesterday's march; reassure the many worried residents; and promote the values that the vast majority of ppl hold to.

We remain an open & welcoming borough; proud to reject hate & division.

The Gov has confirmed that junk food ad restrictions will take legal effect on 5th Jan, with a voluntary agreement in place from 1st Oct.

While the restrictions could go further, this is an important step in tackling the harm caused by the consumption of unhealthy food & drink.

Great to hear SOS for Health, Wes Streeting, speak so passionately about public health at #Nesta #PolicyLive πŸ’¬πŸŒ. When asked what gives him hope for the future, he pointed to investment in prevention and the landmark Tobacco and Vapes Bill 🚭✨

It started with 1 resident from Wavel Court coming to my surgery to complain about flytipping on Leigham Avenue. Now today that same resident joined Marianna & myself, and a group of neighbours from the street, in reclaiming that space for the community. Tnx also to Council's Freshview team.

South London proud. A great day for both Wombles and Eagles fans. I remember the deflated feeling in 2016 when Crystal Palace lost. Went back to the same set of friends in CP for today's game...and happily a very different result.

Thanks Micon. I've already been in conversations with Dunraven on Wells CPZ. Will update them on this too. There are some valid questions to consider on how Council administers teacher permits, esp as currently this excludes non-teaching staff. Equally need to balance with impact on local streets.
