US tornadoes with ≥5 deaths from January 1, 1880 to March 24, 1948. There were 593 of these tornadoes, which killed 10,538 people and injured at least 51,964 people.
US tornadoes with ≥5 deaths from March 25, 1948 to December 31, 2023. There were 295 of these tornadoes, which killed 4321 people and injured 44120 people.
US tornadoes with ≥5 deaths from 1880-1948 vs. those from 1948-2023. The reduction in tornado deaths is one of the many things that investing in the NWS has given us.
