We're back to Question 3 of Tony Benn's five questions to ask those in power about transparancy and accountability:

1) What power have you got?
2) Where did you get it?
3) *In whose interests do you exercise it?*
4) To whom are you accountable?
5) How do we get rid of you?

How the NHS became the battleground in the trans debate at work What's next for employers and their staff in the aftermath of the Darlington nurses ruling?

Entirely typical of the BBC's treatment of trans people that it presents Michael Foran, who is literally on the advisory Board of the Sex Matters hate group, as an independent expert.

Art Cure by Daisy Fancourt, professor of psychobiology and epidemiology at University College London, brings together numerous research projects confirming what we have always suspected - art is good for us. It helps us enjoy happier, healthier and longer lives. One study found that people who engaged regularly with the arts had a 31% lower risk of dying at any point during the follow-up period, even when confounding socioeconomic, demographic and health factors were taken into account.
Studies also show that visiting museums and attending live music events can make people physiologically younger, and a monthly cultural activity almost halves our chances of depression. As Fancourt argues, if a drug boasted such benefits governments would be pouring billions into it. Instead, funding has been slashed across the culture sector and arts education has been devalued and eroded in the UK.

Workshop Session: Modern British Trans History
Modern British Studies Conference, University of Birmingham, 3–5 June 2026

We are seeking expressions of interest for a developmental workshop session in modern British trans history to be held at the Modern British Studies conference in June. Participants will share precirculated papers of between 2,500 and 5,000 words, and discuss these with
each other in an extended-length session as part of the conference programme. They will therefore have the opportunity to receive in-depth feedback in a supportive environment grounded in field expertise, as well as to participate in a wider discussion with fellow modern British trans historians about the state of the field.

Participation is open to researchers working on any aspect of the trans history of Britain, Ireland, and the British Empire since c. 1700. The session is primarily aimed at postgraduate and early-career researchers, but anyone who feels as if they would benefit from the
opportunity to workshop a paper is welcome to register their interest, including historians working outside the academy. If the session is oversubscribed, preference will be given to current PGRs/graduate students.

MBS conference attendees who would like to attend the session without workshopping a paper will have the opportunity nearer the time to register their interest and to receive the precirculated papers.

To register your interest in workshopping a paper in this session, please write to Sam Rutherford (sam.rutherford@glasgow.ac.uk) by 16 January 2026 with a brief indication of your potential paper topic.

Point of no returns: researchers are crossing a threshold in the fight for funding With so little money to go round, the costs of competing for grants can exceed what the grants are worth. When that happens, nobody wins.

This report in Nature on the costs of competing for & administering scientific grants is shocking: "In other words, European taxpayers will have spent more on the funding process than on the funding itself, and the scientific ecosystem has been drained." www.nature.com/articles/d41... πŸ§ͺ

Is it still necessary to point out that β€œhuman rights are a Soviet plot to use the inferior races to undermine and destroy white civilisation” is literal Mein Kampf stuff, by the way? I would like to think people can spot Nazi ideas when they see them, but it’s hard to be confident any more.

After buying it for $18.8 billion, Walgreens' new private equity owner has eliminated paid holidays for all hourly workers on Christmas and New Year's.

Last year, Walgreens had a CEO-to-Worker pay gap of 410 to 1.
