Why So Many Smart People Aren’t Happy It’s a paradox: Shouldn’t the most accomplished be well equipped to make choices that maximize life satisfaction?

The only reason I have stayed (mostly) sane as an academic is because when I took my first job, my family said, "Bloom where you're planted." If you knew my fam, you'd know that's the last thing I'd have expected to hear. But it set me up to just do the work I wanted to do, not climb or compare.

2023 - 2024: interviewed 97 people and visited 89 houses across Victoria, Australia and the Philippines.

May - June 2025: Final phase, following up w/ 30 main informants. I’m halfway!
