I actually think Waititi is a great fit for this material. There's something very absurdist and wacky about it, even while there's an undercurrent of intense sadness. And I think Waititi is good at that!

…So, when writing, the question isn’t, “What should happen next?” It’s, “What COULD happen next?” And that’s pretty exciting. We just get to riff! It’s like jazz, ya know? 😅 Maybe this is all pretty obvious, but I’m trying to get down something that felt like a lightbulb moment…

…And, of course, it has to be satisfying, but that’s where your own style as a writer comes in and you get to decide what YOU want to see, and what’s awesome to YOU, and if you do that well, other people will respond to it. Which really opens things up! …

…the only rules are that it has to be authentic and true to something, whatever it is you’re trying to do. It doesn’t even have to be plausible most of the time (as FD gleefully demonstrates), it just has to be honest, in some way…

…Sometimes us writers agonize over plot and “what happens next” in a way that can be joyless, but something about FD illuminates how freeing it can be. It’s an improv session between yourself and made-up characters where you get to be a mad god and create anything you want, and the only rules…

…that were carefully established before. But while it’s happening, it doesn’t feel forced. It’s, well, like watching a train wreck, or a multiple car pileup involving a logging truck. It’s a pure distillation of everything storytelling…

…until the whole thing finally collapses (or explodes) in spectacular, disgusting fashion, like a twisted game of Jenga. Or reverse Jenga, I guess. And it’s so much fun to watch. The best FD death sequences also feel earned because they incorporate little details, character traits, and what not…

I love the Final Destination series because it’s awesome but also because it illuminates something exciting about moviemaking (and storytelling). FD revolves around Rube Goldberg set pieces where they layer incident upon dramatic incident until…
