To get people excited about diversity rather than scared of it, we need to make them feel safe and secure in their own lives and identities. If the life you want is in reach in a real way, and not just theiretucsll/superficially, you'll have much less insecurities to exploit.

At heart, all of us ultimately want to be in control of our own lives. For many of us - especially those who in one way or another don't fall perfectly within society's traditional "normal" - having options is a lifeline.

For others - having options is scary, because you may make bad choices.

The far right taps heavily in this sentiment : the aggrieved frustrations of people who really really value being "normal" and derive a certain sense of superiority from it. They are frustrated nor because their preferences aren't catered to - but because they are one of the many options available.

But the vibe I'm getting a lot from people who feel like our local high street is declining rather than thriving - they are kinda resentful that their specific preferences are indeed a niche - even if a niche well catered to, but ultimately not *the default*.

Interesting aspect - kinda spurned by argument with a local bore in the neighbourhood Facebook group.
