It was honestly one of my favourite interactions when I was over there LOL.

I went to the Osaka aquarium in Japan, and I was wearing the T-shirt of your stabby sea creatures. The ticket lady loved it. (She said, Kawaii T-shiatsu, demo chotto violence desu ne?)

I once pulled up to a stop light and some dude was revving at me (I guess he wanted to race, I don't know 🤷). He was blaring ... something. I cranked the Lucky Star opening and giggled at the confused look on his face. (Mentioned because I see it in your PL 😆) ... it's in my head now 😅

Our GP took me seriously. He facilitated the referral. It was just the waiting.
The nurse? Can't wait to tell the memory clinic how that went. (It's in the same hospital).

My therapist is also helping by sending me some support groups through the Alzheimer's Society. I am hoping this clinic appointment goes well and we can get some support. My dad "presents well." I've spent the last nine months wondering what is enough to be taken seriously.

Today, I was chatting with an acquaintance in similar circumstances.
"Do you know what they did when my father told them he was worried about my mother's memory issues? They asked her how her memory was."
We vented, and she was kind to share some local resources with me.

My friend, whose grandparents both had dementia, has been giving me tips. I've made my own accommodations in the meantime to try to keep everyone safe. The mental load is exhausting. The advocacy is exhausting.

That was November, 2024. In September, 2024, I asked our GP for a referral for my dad. They finally called two weeks ago to set him up with an appointment at a memory clinic. June, 2025.

I called them back the next day to leave a clear message that I expected the nurse to do some due diligence and at least leave the note with the specialist. The worry being that my father wasn't taking important medication -- we hadn't seen the prescription come through the house in months.

When I tell you how utterly deflating and defeating it was to hear a nurse call back from a key specialist to ask that to my father.
His response? "Oh it's working fine I think!"
Her: "Daughters worry don't they?"

It's wildly frustrating to learn that I am not the only person in a child-acting-as-caregiver role who flagged memory issues to a doctor/specialist and had them follow up by asking the parent with said issues: "So, how's your memory?"

Fun fact, it was my new ergonomic keyboard. Sigh.
