Mark Carney courts oil industry in bid to Trump-proof Canada’s economy Prime minister and Liberal party head touts ‘grand bargain’ with fossil fuel sector

In case anyone is wondering, “decarbonized oil and gas” does not exist, is a complete contradiction in terms, and a dangerous lie that Canadian government after Canadian government has tried to spin under the spell of industry lobbying. How disappointing.

Thanks for the explanation. It's fascinating, as a player, to learn more about the making side of things.

How does tuning work with an all-wood headjoint? Do you move the head out from the tenon and just have cork lining the whole way?

Opinion: Let’s not get too excited about pipelines. Canadians can’t afford another Amid Donald Trump’s trade war, many have argued for more pipelines to reduce our reliance on the U.S. market – even federal Liberal cabinet ministers

Great opinion piece by Amy Janzwood:

"The era of new mega oil sands pipelines is over [...] Pipelines are decades-long gambles that burden taxpayers and governments while private investors walk away unscathed."

The high-risk gas assets owned by Canadian pension funds – and why hydrogen won’t save them — Shift - Protect Your Pension and the Planet Shift’s new report, Gaslighting the Energy Transition, reveals how Canada’s largest pension funds have billions invested in private gas utility companies around the world, putting the climate and our ...

This was a long one--thanks for reading--so let me end with thanks for all the SHIFT crew for taking me on and letting me get nerdy with this. I'll link the report (again)and a bit of coverage below:

- Face the facts that gas companies have to transform their business model and plan for infrastructure decommissioning;
- Divest from gas companies that refuse to align with scientifically credible decarbonization plans.

Basically: pension managers need to do their due diligence.

So--what should pension funds do if they want to keep making money and help the energy transition? We have four ideas:
- Tell the gas companies they co-own to stop investing in gas and H2 infrastructure;
- Tell their beneficiaries how much they've invested in gas companies;

15.01.2025 12:29 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Gas needs to be phased out, and there's no viable path for hydrogen to save gas infrastructure. Arguing otherwise gaslights (ugh) pension funds into thinking their investments(read: your retirement funds) are safe.

They're not.

15.01.2025 12:29 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Before the H2 bros come at me: sure, there are really good industrial applications for green hydrogen! But this isn't what we're talking about. Gas utilities are arguing they can transform existing infrastructure to create H2 networks and keep their status quo going.

This is magical thinking.

15.01.2025 12:29 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Hydrogen is the Swiss army knife of the energy transition: theoretically, it can do a lot, but practically, it kind of sucks.
- H2 cars are dead
- It's the most expensive way to heat a house (incl. gas!)
- It loses a tonne of energy the minute you try to transport it anywhere
So, not a solution.

15.01.2025 12:29 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Gas is a high-risk investment as the energy transition accelerates worldwide. Gas utilities are scared of this, so lots are invoking a silver bullet: use hydrogen to decarbonize!

If we pump clean H2 into gas pipelines, we save the bottom line AND go green. Right?

If wishing made it so!

New writing! With @adamscott.bsky.social and the folks at SHIFT, I helped explain how Canada's pension funds have bought into the hydrogen hype and are holding on to high-risk gas assets that'll harm people's retirements as the world transitions to green energy.

For all that folks in Montréal sometimes complain about unplowed bike lanes, they're actually completely practicable with 5" of snow in them so long as the snow's light enough! It's a dream going down a snowy path... until you hit the brown sugar made by the SUVs at the intersection.

The saltiness of your salt will vary depending on the type, so it's worth experimenting a bit! A good gauge is just to taste the cabbage to see if it's salty. Pleasantly salty=probably fine; face scrunched up=too much salt.

Hope this helps!

Long time fermenter here! I usually go for 2% salt per weight of cabbage (eg, I have 2 kg of cabbage => I put 20g of kosher salt), give it a good massage, wait an hour or two once it's packed into a jar and then top it up with a 2% salt solution. The amount of water will depend on the cabbage.
