How the oil and gas industry helped rewrite New Zealandโs drilling rules
A paper trail shows just how far ministers went to accommodate the industry's wishlist, including giving it access to draft laws.
This is government for the benefit of big polluters. While excluding the public, Shane Jones and his advisors repeatedly consulted the oil and gas industry, resulting in a new decommissioning regime that shifts the risk back to taxpayers. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

You're not wrong โ and if the fossil fuel industry could magically cure the climate crisis (which they keep pretending to via CCS pipedreams etc), that might be the same.
But neither industry has invested in remedying the harms they've caused, right?

But there's a deeper question behind this too: Do we want the oligopolistic, exploitative industry that has done the most to cause the climate crisis, that has a history bundled up in war, colonialism, & human rights violations to have a big stake in the renewable energy future?

Fossil fuel companies say they support the energy transition. New numbers suggest otherwise.
A new study shows that fossil fuel companies own less than 2 percent of renewable energy projects worldwide.
This is very useful, timely analysis built on Global Energy Monitor data, confirming that fossil fuel companies are not meaningfully investing in the energy transition. These companies are responsible for a tiny 0.1% of global renewable energy production.

Whatever the killerโs motives, it is clear that political violence is a problem that extends across ideology. Prominent conservatives, moderates and liberals have all been victims in recent years.
It's worth asking why every elite institution is issuing statements like this rather than pointing out the obvious fact that the institutional right commits and glorifies violence far more than the left. Is there a reason you feel you can't say that out loud?

Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die
July 21, 2025
AFP has been working with 1 writer, 3 photographers and 6 videographers, all freelance, in the Gaza Strip since its staff journalists left in 2024.
Along with a few others, they are now the only ones left to report what is happening in the Gaza Strip. The international press has been banned from entering the territory for nearly two years.
We refuse to watch them die.
One of them, Bashar, has been working with AFP since 2010, first as a fixer, then freelance photographer, and since 2024, as lead photographer. On July 19th he managed to post a message on Facebook: โI no longer have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I canโt work anymore.โ
Bashar, 30, works & lives in the same conditions as all Gazans, moving from one refugee camp to another under Israeli bombings. For > a year heโs lived in utter destitution, working at extreme risk to his life. Hygiene is a major issue for him, with recurring bouts of severe intestinal illness.
Since Feb, Basharโs been living in the ruins of his home in Gaza City with his mother, 4 brothers & sisters and the family of one of his brothers. Their house is devoid of any furnishings, except a few cushions. On Sunday morning, he reported that one of his brothers had โfallen, due to hunger.โ
Even though these journalists receive a monthly salary from AFP, itโs no longer enough to buy food, or they have to pay completely exorbitant prices. The banking system has collapsed, and those who exchange money via online bank accounts charge a commission of up to 40%.
AFP no longer has the ability to provide them with a vehicle and there is not enough fuel to allow these journalists to travel for their reporting. Driving a car means becoming a target for Israeli airstrikes. AFP reporters therefore travel on foot or by donkey cart. (alt txt continued in next post)
A horrifying statement published today by the Editorial Committee of the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

There are no rules any more. The political pendulum is now a wrecking ball
OPINION: Compromise is out, consensus is dead, and the country is being governed by tantrum and teardown.
There is a lot to agree with in this Andrea Vance column.
But she misdiagnoses the problem and engages in unjustifiable both-sides-ism. MMP is not the problem. The populist far right is the problem.
