The Stories We Tell Ourselves about Peace and Genocide

Dirk Moses senses βan air of desperationβ in recent responses of the pro-Statsrason thinkers. βTheir catechism is buckling under the reality that the German publicβincluding even some functionaries of the German stateβcan clearly see.β

Very important point by Dirk Moses (shortened by me):
"Germanyβs fixation on the Nazi regime locks actors into a catastrophic binary of absolute innocence and absolute evil.
Coming to terms with the Nazi past can't mean adopting its categorization of the world by simply inverting the value signs."

Excellent analysis from @dirkmoses.bsky.social of the implications of Western leaders devaluing Holocaust memory by invoking it to justify another genocide in Gaza:

Is Holocaust Memory Over? β the Diasporist
How the German political and media classes have hollowed out the lessons of history
In @thediasporist.bsky.social, @dirkmoses.bsky.social asks whether Holocaust memory has run its course: "If anyone has killed belief in Holocaust memory, it is Western political classes whose misuse of it to justify an undeniable evil have destroyed its currency."

I deplore how the German and western political classes have abused Holocaust memory to the point that publics have lost faith in its lessons.

I donβt know. Three German newspapers approached me for interviews over the past 18 months but none followed through. By contrast, Iβve done plenty for other European outlets. Some academic colleagues in Germany say they canβt invite me lest they get into trouble. This does not happen elsewhere.
