Section 745.51 effectively authorizes the imposition of a sentence of imprisonment for life without a realistic possibility of parole. Where the offence of first degree murder is concerned, rehabilitation is already subordinate to the objectives of denunciation and deterrence, as can be seen from the severity of the mandatory minimum sentence for this offence.
