It would be great if the answer was just "he would have gotten a lot more work in the sequels, wouldn't he?"

I somehow missed this movie despite it being right in my wheelhouse (very Buffy-coded but more campy and gay). It's a delight from start to finish. So much about it is objectively bad, but as a while it's a thing of beauty.

After my newsletter last week about celebrating small occasions, I received this email from a reader, Mark Everson, about the importance of honoring milestone moments on the way to the finish line:
I could not agree more with your piece this morning.
When I served in the Bush administration as deputy director for management at the
O.M.B., I was part of the five-person team charged with assessing the organization of government after 9/11. Our work was conducted in secret (to avoid resistance to change from certain stakeholders) and we met periodically after hours with senior administration officials to review progress and discuss options.

After a number of weeks, at the end of one meeting, the White House chief of staff, Andy Card, said our proposal to create D.H.S. was taking shape and he would bring it to the president.
I told my fellow team members that we had to go to my office in the Eisenhower Building and crack open a bottle of champagne I had left over from a recent reception. One colleague said, "Why? Nothing is done yet." I replied, "This may be as far as we get!" In some things, especially when the end result is far from certain, you need to celebrate as you

This is a psychotic thing to publish as a feel-good letter in 2025

Lucinda closed her set with a cover of Rockin' in the Free World, a song I first heard when Neil Young played an acoustic version at the same venue 36 years ago (the performance that was later used as the opening track on Freedom)

The good thing about today's discourse is that anyone waiting for bluesky to figure out the most ethical way to get laid was already never going to get laid

Swifties arguing that you should wait until the end of the month to celebrate August are like the people during Y2K who said "actually, the new millennium begins on January 1, 2001"

Sammy Davis Jr started out doing a Sinatra impersonation. The first time he sang for Frank, Frank told him β€œYou’re good kid. Next time sing like yourself.”

All those early R&B covers are so good. They sought out rarities, which means they're the main reason many of these songs are now remembered at all!

I feel like my go-to answer used to be Hey Bulldog but that’s become a bit of a hipster standard in the last few decades so maybe Things We Said Today, or if that’s too common, I’ll Follow the Sun

"Go see great clown Pagliacci. He'll cheer you up."
"But doctor, I am Pavarotti!"
"No, I said Pagliacci. The clown."
"Oh."
"You think some shitty opera singer is gonna cheer anyone up?"
"..."
"No one likes opera singers!"

"Hey, Martha, this schmuck thought I'd tell people to go to the opera!"

Well, one cold day, a posse captured Billy
And the judge said, "String him up for what he did!"
And the cowboys and their kin
Like the sea came pourin' in
To watch the hanging of Billy the Kid

Well, one cold day, a posse captured Billy And the judge said, "String him up for what he did!" And the cowboys and their kin Like the sea came pourin' in To watch the hanging of Billy the Kid

When I saw Billy Joel in concert he followed his performance of The Ballad of Billy the Kid by correcting all the song's historical inaccuracies, ending with: "And he wasn't hung, he was shot. Sorry, I mean he wasn't hanged. We don't know if he was hung."

Oh cool! The song is about how the industry manufactures and throws away it girls, so it's still tragic in its own way

Yeah, so tragic. Of course Taylor's song didn't really turn out to be about her, but there's definitely a song to be written.
