I don't plan much ahead of writing, so when the story needs a new aspect of the world to be fleshed out, I do it as needed. Sometimes I'll add extra world building during revisions to add more depth too.

I know some of the broad details when I start. Sometimes it's important to the plot. Then I fill in details as I write. I usually write sci-fi & fantasy.
