I (a white woman in her 30s) am standing in a large warehouse smiling. Behind me is a large storage rack filled with white boxes, each box is roughly the size of me and the racks stretch to the ceiling and into the distance.

How many segments make a mirror?

Each white box contains a hexagonal segment which will make up the primary mirror for the @eso.org ELT. A total of 798 segments are required and each is *almost* as tall as me, this warehouse has the first ~200 that have been made. #astronomy

An xkcd cartoon titled β€œTypical exoplanet system”. There’s a drawing of a star and several weird planets orbiting around it. The planets are labeled as follows:

Giant planet orbiting so close that it’s actually rolling on the star’s surface.

Hot Jupiter.

Mini Neptune.

Planet that could be habitable, if there’s a form of life that hates water but loves acid and being on fire.

Cold Jupiter.

Potentially habitable void.

Hot Mars.

Planet that may actually be in the habitable zone, according to a very optimistic modelling paper by some desperate postdocs.

There’s a pulsar here but it’s probably fine.

A water world paradise with beautiful oceans and warm- wait, no, we just got new measurements, it’s a hellish steam oven.

Mini Pluto.

Lukewarm Jupiter.

Earthlike data artifact.

Planet whose atmosphere is confirmed to contain atoms.

Wet Saturn.

Either a gas giant or a fist-sized rock, depending which calibration method you use.

Faint dust cloud that will cause several papers to be retracted.

Somehow this whole system is smaller than the orbit of Mercury?!

Planet whose surface may host conditions suitable for rocks.

Mouseover text: Sure, this exoplanet we discovered may seem hostile to life, but our calculations suggest it’s actually in the accretion disc’s habitable zone.

A white woman stands in front of an old English Manor House. She is smiling and holding two large, gold, helium balloons which spell out β€˜DR’. The balloons are each roughly half of her height.

Folks, if you still have energy and want to direct it somewhere, my incredible officemate, @marcyharbut.bsky.social, lost her house in the #LAFires. Her brother set up a gofundme to help them start over. She's THE BEST - so please help if you can.

EVERYBODY STOP.

I just learned that a good boy or good girl climbed all the way to the top of the Great Pyramid of Giza to shout at some birds.

Anubis guards the tomb of the pharaohs from Horus. The mythological tales were real.

Congrats, it’s twins! Iconic brown dwarf is actually two iconic brown dwarfs Gliese 229B is actually two of these weird objects in a tight orbit around each other

Man, I love me some brown dwarfs. They are just the coolest (haha! ha!) objects. And this is one I actually studied and had *no clue* it was actually twins!

And to anyone who happens to be sitting on the #JWST TAC this year, please be kind to the applicants, and don’t give them a list of 20 things to add next cycle… the ideas and nuances were all in there originally, but they were left on the cutting room floor.
