With support from an ALA grant, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Libraries in Michigan launched Kna-dwen-mi-go (βyou are neededβ)βa civic engagement program encouraging Native community members to run for non-Tribal elected office.
Representation matters. Native people make up 3.4% of the U.S. population but just 0.07% of elected officials.
Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Libraries created a program to help reverse that trend with funding from ALA's Peggy Barber Tribute Grant.
