sorry that it became a bit of a rant lol, i always found it easier to understand what i'm trying to depict after someone's pointed out what it is i'm even meant to look for instead of just
"follow this walkthrough"

you need to look at a few objects in context like so, then try apply it in a drawing

Painting metal is painting dulled, odd shaped mirrors showing your artpiece's enviroment, and you need to balance how much can be represented on it's surface area as well as artistic stylization while you keep in mind the intended viewing distance

Then when you have an inkling of what is happening try paint it on some old sketch or stuff you already had
Where is your light? How close is it? What color is it?
What other lightsources might affect your metal? Can they show under ambient occlusion?

Turn on a nearby light, move something brightly colored nearby, change it's distance from primary and secondary lightsources, block off some of the light to see the enviromental lights in the cast shadows and such :)

No step walkthrough will make you understand the properties of the material, just a possible order in how to axhieve it

Go find something metal in your house! Spoon, bit of pen, case of a tealight... and look at the surface, study it.
Now change something in it's enviroment

You can even paint the light that reflected off the metal onto a surface nearby, like a little mirror.

Think of LIGHT hitting metal, not shadows. Cant get there manually just yet? Mess with some adjustment layers

Shh its ok, just remember its reflectivity and topology. Higher contrast shading, be tougher on reflective light and highlights. You can even make the light reflecting on the metal the same color as enviromental light or nearest object
