Most of Europe is rich in history like this. I've never been to Portugal but lots of friends have. Every single one loved it.

We of course took in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré. I’m very impressed with Portuguese religious art and its heroic efforts to restore. The church here incorporates the Deer Man legend

These are brilliant!

So I will pick up with our afternoon at Nazaré. Site of some of the most enormous waves and a surfer’s paradise. Cool little beach town as well.

Pedro claimed he and Ines had been secretly married and that she was his rightful queen. He had her body exhumed and made all of the Royals and as many subjects as they could line up file through and kiss the ring on her decomposing hand.

and wife for 12 years having 3 children, but none of the royals or subjects liked Ines, especially Pedro’s father King Alfonso IV. King got fed up and had Ines murdered. Pedro w broken hearted. In a matter of weeks or months King Alfonso IV died and Pedro I was crowned. Then the vengeance began.

Then the Monastery there holds the tombs of the Royals. And What a story. King Pedro I and his Queen Ines of Castro. Ines was not Pedro’s first wife. Her name was Constance and Ines was her Lady in Waiting who had a passionate affair with Pedro. Constance died and Pedro and Ines lived as man

The monument was to the Portuguese hero’s who defeated the Spanish. 6,000 Portuguese defeated 30,000 Spaniards. It must have been carnage.
