I am 63. I was in diapers during the Bay of Pigs crisis and, yes, I’m aware of how bad that was… even though my memory doesn’t go back quite that far.

I started with the point that most of my students were born after 9/11. I feel old… it seems like yesterday to me. 😳

The politics and the music reflected the times, and I explained my choice in music for the lesson.

Every time I taught that lesson, my students were stunned. That’s the kind of lesson I love to teach, because they truly learn and remember it.

No matter what the first-round choices were (launching always was laughed at heartily), the teams always agreed not to launch, thankfully.

I noted that I went to college during the early 80s, when US-USSR tensions were extremely high. We weren’t entirely sure we’d be around the next day.

For the second round, each side sentenced 3-4 delegates for a summit. The group received a two-sided payoff matrix, giving a more complete picture of the consequences of their choices. I collected their decision as well. The background music: “Stand or Fall” by The Fixx.

During the first round, each side received a dossier with a one-sided payoff matrix. They would decide whether or not to launch their missiles at the other side. I collected their decisions. The background music was Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime”.

Few of my students were even born before 9/11, much less old enough to remember the Cold War.

I used to teach a lesson in game theory about mutual assured destruction. The class was split into Americans and Soviets.

The TV is off, the music is on, and I am writing notes and programs. Life has to go on and I have to budget my time wisely. So, even though I feel this way about what’s going on…

I’m trying to budget my online time. I go back to the classroom in a month, so there is prep to do. Also, there are the usual chores, appointments, family time, and so on.

I’m also trying to be productive and clear my head of the negative thoughts due to the current state of affairs.
