Persistent virus is perhaps the simplest explanation of long COVID but studies have reported variable rates of persistent virus to date. Here, the authors report persistent Spike protein in the absence of persistent virus. Interesting concept.

Persistence of spike protein at the skull-meninges-brain axis may contribute to the neurological sequelae of COVID-19 SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to long-lasting neurological sequelae, but underlying mechanisms are unclear. Rong et al. report that SARS-CoV-2 spike protein persists in the skull-meninges-brain axis, inducing inflammation, neurodegeneration-related changes, and increasing the brain’s vulnerability to further injury.

What do others think of this? I’m sceptical of any universal #microbiome signature. In this case they focus on genomes which “were detectable in more than 75% of the samples”. This seems very high to me but they found hundreds of genomes which met this threshold?
