One thing that’s funny about how we react to stuff like this is how earnest we are. Workers were as likely to think “census? I’m gonna fuck with this guy” then as now. Taking the piss was not invented in the 20th century

we're all very powerless right now and for some people having their cynicism proved right gives them the illusion of control

I've had this conversation with a LOT of people who were DOGEd or otherwise chased out of the gov't in DC and every single one of them is like "yeah if and when things swing back the other way I will come here and rebuild with my bare hands if that's what it takes"

i am feeling, i am seeing, i am hearing, i am getting the vibes, that students this sem are better than they've been in years because learning offers a rare haven from authoritarianism, a place to convene, commune, think together, refuel for the fight

one of the guides here at the titanic museum was just explaining how the dockworkers only had six minutes of breaks a day including bathroom breaks and an Irish woman behind me very loudly and helpfully asked “what if they had diarrhea?” and I chimed in that we were all thinking it

am in Dublin, they rented me a car called a Skoda that I decided to call Skoda Kob. due to some recent horrible EU nanny state restriction I can’t make Skoda Kob stop beeping every time I go 10kph over the speed limit. I hate Skoda Kob with my life

My next book will be a throwback to early 20th century spiritualism and will be written entirely by ouija board, very Patience Worth, very cutesy, not doing too much like those other authors

Not exaggerating when I say that SB 79, a bill making it easier to build housing near mass transit, is the most consequential piece of legislation that the Democratic Party has passed all year. Saying no to the worst people in our coalition proves we're serious about the future.

I am familiar with this form factor problem which is why I own a 2 slot 4090 manufactured by a no name Chinese AI company that sounds like a 757 engine. I wanted it to fit in my ITX box and I got my wish 😎

other alternative is just put another GPU in there to drive the desktop. in my years as an arch user I generally found that with desktop Linux it’s weirdly easier to solve problems with more hardware than more software

it’s unintuitive but unless WSL2 is bottlenecking your I/O severely, Windows is generally better for desktop GPGPU for the reason that it does not prevent the machine with the GPU from also being used as a desktop

I honestly don’t think there are (m)any checks to prevent Linux desktop managers from competing with GPGPU memory assignment, when I last tried playing with vramfs (github.com/Overv/vramfs) the readme was like "yeah if you try to do actual graphics stuff this will eventually just collide"

I think the killer argument against relying upon AI to write is the massive amount of thinking and concept-welding that goes on for me (and I assume most everyone else) during the *process* of writing something - it’s a cognitive process and I know I’d actively get stupider if I skipped it

We surveyed 90 trans Texans. Most said they’re living in fear and weighing a move Respondents said anti-trans policies have complicated their sense of home in Texas and pushed them to consider leaving the state.

My dope friend Adrian, who is trans, interviewed 90 transgender Texans. His project is finally out: www.dallasnews.com/news/politic...

One day the industry will recognize the drawbacks of AI agents and nondeterministic automation, and rediscover the UNIX philosophy of chaining together small purpose built tools in a low cost and predictable way, otherwise known as shell scripts.

very fascinated by US airports that fly internationally but only to destinations that have customs preclearance so they don’t actually need a customs office. I am only aware of 2: Maui (Canada) and Hartford (Ireland)

I believe these are the first Chicagoland NTBs, which is significant because grand juries sit for a long time— we didn’t previously know that Chicago’s GJs were fed up with this stuff and now we do.

JUST IN: The Republican Mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska’s second biggest city, lost re-election last night to a Democrat.

Mayor David Pruhs is a conservative who fought protections for LGBTQ+ residents; he made comments this year drew condemnation this year from Alaska Natives. He lost to Mindy O'Neall.
