I’ve seen UK people quite reasonably saying how odd it is that it’s being shown here, when nobody wants to see it and anyone could’ve predicted that. But I think they‘re trying to look at it as an honest film project and missing that it only exists as a vehicle for currying favour

I am finding this book infuriating— seventy pages in and I feel like I’ve learned nothing except that the author loves the sound of his own voice

I mean this whole film can’t be looked at as a normal commercial project, it’s the film studios trying to curry favour

Nobody here wants to see it, everybody knows that nobody wants to see it, but that’s not why it exists so it doesn’t deter them

although for some reason Michelle Obama’s book (and actually Barack’s books too) sold well here— I think because they’re more generic ‘inspirational stuff from inspirational famous person’

Honestly I’m okay with each Fire Emblem that does this because the leitmotifs are always good

There’s 4 side stories which combine 2 protagonists; I played it just half a year ago and I don’t remember what those were at all, they’re short and not very interesting. Then an ending which ties some things together in ways that dont feel necessary. The individual eight stories are still the core

I liked Octopath 1 a fair bit, and bounced off Octopath 2 because I expected it to be dramatically more different than it was based on people’s reactions. If you liked the self-contained stories of OT1 that’s basically all still there, although I didn’t think they were very good

OT1/2 can’t do anything like Winesburg about the isolation of people’s lives; they’re not isolated, there’s a party of eight! It just doesn’t actually integrate them in any way itself

If there’s anything to be said for its storytelling style IMO it’s that it asks the player to do some work in imagining— why has Hikari decided to travel with Partitio? The game gives us nothing so we have to fill the void, but there’s only so far that could stretch.

The problem for me with this is that Octopath I and II, IMO, had painfully generic stories and only ever attempted something unique and interesting when they were tying things together and recontextualising the things we saw before (like Redeye in Haanit’s story)
