eh, I don't see it as Dwayne's performance is greatly helped by the production as well as being mega-understated

it's definitely getting a nomination for make-up

the action sequences are very well done, i forget the rock is technically fifty now

nah it was more like WOOO YEAH GO KERR KERR for ten seconds

i'm not trying to be overly critical (yes i am), if you're a 90s MMA fiend then watch it so you can nudge someone and yell HEY LOOK IT'S STEPHEN QUADROS and it is cool seeing Rock do a non-Rock

i'm just saying don't go in expecting The Fighter or Warrior

not that weird, he's under more make-up than Boris Karloff and his physique is very Kerr-ish anyway

people in the cinema were talking A LOT during it (cos it's Saturday night) which meant some laughing at scenes that were supposed to be serious

but also when Kerr was making his entrance in PRIDE, one guy was yelling "C'MON MARK!"

and people applauded after it was over which is new for me

shot-for-shot no but it's trying really hard to look and feel just like the documentary, shaky cam and all

which is an odd choice, like 1998 Psycho featuring Bas Rutten

don't get me wrong, the effort on display is impressive and as a nerd I got a kick out of seeing actors portray guys like Paul Verhans and Akira Shoji

but half-way through i did wonder why anyone would focus this hard on re-enacting a documentary and not add anything to it. like, just watch the doc

as a film by itself? ehhh

trying to make it a re-enacted documentary gives it a weird quality where as good as the action and training sequences are, the emotive scenes sometimes come across almost like cheesy soap operas or reality shows

the cinema laughed when Kerr smashed his door in anger

it definitely succeeded as a faithful recreation of a brutal documentary because a ton of effort clearly went into making everything & everybody look accurate. there was at least one time i had to squint and go "that's actually Mark Kerr isn't it?"
