It's hard to built a nice setup with all those moving pieces. But so is setting up a RESTful API with similar capabilities (I'd even argue GraphQL is strictly more capable). So far I haven't seen a better solution to data fetching for the overwhelming majority of use cases in the web app world.

The recent backlash against GraphQL is due to people not appreciating that it is part of a larger system together with Relay and Dataloader. If you only use one component of that system you're going to have a bad time. GraphQL without Relay sucks on the client, and without Dataloader your db burns.
