I find the most compelling time of day along the meadow is that quiet hour just before sunrise, especially in winter. I’ve always found these moments lend themselves to quieter, more revealing images which rely on tone and mood, as opposed to sharp, intense, contrasting colours.

For the first few weeks, the pup’s whole world is mum. She nurses it with incredibly rich milk—about 60% fat, like the world’s most supercharged smoothie—which helps the baby balloon in weight, sometimes gaining two kilos a day. The pup doesn’t swim yet; that snowy fur isn’t waterproof, and the ocean is an unforgiving place if you’re basically wearing a waterlogged bathrobe. So it stays ashore, usually close to its mother, snoozing, stretching, flopping around awkwardly, and yelling its distinctive bleating call whenever she wanders off.
