Must be the time of year. Big feelings. Got a surprise email from one of my oldest mentors today, grateful they are still alive and got to tell them in my reply, how much they influenced the trajectory of my life.

Opinion: Why changing the clocks for daylight saving time runs counter to human nature β€” and nature itself As far as humans know, we are the only species that chooses to fight against our biological presets, regularly changing our clocks and dragging ourselves into and out of bed at unnatural hours.

I loved this article! I am so grateful for the shift in seasons and being able to slow down, sleep. And will celebrate the turning of the year again in spring.

Opinion: Alaska’s time problem isn’t about the clock As Alaska resets its clocks again, we must ask if we can’t even decide what time it is, how can we lead our own future?

Excellent read. Both stories remind me so much of why I choose AK as my home. There’s a richness to the cultural values here that is unobtrusive but infuses so much of our lives, if we choose to allow them to.

And it occurs to me in this juxtaposition, and observing my aging parents who consider themselves progressive, that the entire country is going through a transition that is exciting, has great potential, but it is not without uncertainty and discomfort as governance shifts to represent our nation.

I said I would do this last night but I was too tired so lets do it today. A few caveats - not saying this list is exhaustive, it's just a good place to start. It's also not in chronological order because I'm a chaos gremlin

Cat who had to take a shower last night and hasn’t been brushed yet.

So, I’ve never heard anyone describe the experience of transporting a cat on a long plane trip. First trip went fine. Yesterday’s trip, not as fine.

Let’s just say the layover was messy, and neither of us were a fan of showering together after arriving. But we survived and are still friends.

"In response to recent severe storms, including Typhoon Halong, that devastated Alaska's western coast, local community organizations and regional partners have come together to establish the Western Alaska Disaster Relief Fund, housed at the Alaska Community Foundation.
Two major storm systems struck western Alaska in rapid succession, bringing record flooding, extreme winds, and extensive damage from Kwigillingok to Kotzebue. Homes have been damaged and destroyed, critical infrastructure compromised, and subsistence resources disrupted. The Western Alaska Disaster Relief Fund will provide support to affected communities for immediate relief, recovery support, and long-term resilience, including disaster preparedness initiatives. Distribution decisions will be guided by advisors including regional leaders and stakeholders, ensuring resources reach affected communities based on locally identified needs.

The Western Alaska Disaster Relief Fund brings together a growing list of local, regional, and statewide partners endorsing the fund, including:

    Alaska Federation of Natives
    Alaska Native Heritage Center

Have I mentioned yet today how much I do not like one drive? Is it possible to devise a more user unfriendly system for creating and storing presentations?

Later, in 2010/2011, in college the second time, I learned about the simultaneous internment of Alaskan Aleut in Wrangell. Again, from a classmate.Their parents were paid in scrip for work β€œharvesting” fur seals to pay for the purchase of Alaska.

I learned about the Japanese internment camps from children of Nisei who were my classmates growing up. Our teacher encouraged them to present about it. It was heartfelt and eye opening.

Yep, Schindler’s list felt like Hollywood version of Night and Fog, which I had the distinct privilege of watching at least twice in middle/high school. What horrifies me is that my children learned nothing of the holocaust during school. They saw both films, at home, as teens.
