Excellent review Blake. I’ve been making my way through the novel, and your observations are spot on. More people in the DoD should be making FicInt part of their regular reading.

They serve as a stark reminder that deterrence value isn’t determined by us, but in the minds of our competitors. They will eventually tell us if they are deterred through their actions.

Unfortunately no Wegmans on Capitol Hill, but I see Three Notch’d in a lot of places, maybe I’ll run across it. This offering from Solace isn’t bad.

I need to be on the lookout for that.

Inflection Point: How to Reverse the Erosion of U.S. and Allied Military Power and Influence - War o... As diplomatic efforts in Europe and Asia intensify, so too should U.S. military planning and preparations for a world that is drastically different and

"the United States and its allies no longer have a virtual monopoly on the technologies and capabilities that made them so dominant...near-real-time sensing, high-capacity communications links, precision guidance via miniaturized electronics, and advanced software being primary among these."

The US retains an advantage (for now) in innovation. We need a national strategy (not a security strategy) that identifies this and maps the ways this innovation must feed into our industrial base and provide for a human capital strategy to support it. We cannot simply spend our way out of this.

I keep hearing otherwise very smart people repeat the saying β€œGaza is the most densely populated place on earth.” It is not even the most densely populated place in the Levant. Stop saying it.

Not gonna lie, I'm freaking out a little about the lack of reporting on Marine Corps Commandant Smith's condition. Not because I don't think the Corps will be okay, it will ... but because I'm genuinely concerned for a good man, friend, leader, and mentor.

I mean, MCCDC and DC CD&I is always dual hatted, and Heckl was probably a close second to Smith to become Commandant if previous trends had continued. Not that I’m defending Tuberville, but this isn’t the worst result of his Tom foolery.

God be with the Commandant and his family; wishing him a speedy recovery and return to full duty soon.

Something to ponder: Is it checkers to deepen alliances with countries like Australia, and chess to secure agreements with countries China would logically shift to for resources, like Guinea? Can we do both? Does it matter? www.scmp.com/news/china/d...

Fantastic article! We have a serious human capital ceiling in all of our current maritime efforts, perhaps most acutely in sub production. That ceiling can be raised, but with great effort. Even if we had the $1.3T it takes to execute our NDS, we couldn’t spend it.

26.10.2023 12:08 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yep. We can make all the commitments and promises we want - still requires a defense industrial base, including the necessary human capital, to execute. I’m not sure we have it.

I see a lot of articles again lately about a Navy’s job is to sink the other Navy, period. I get it, young budding Mahanians. What’s often missing in these pronouncements is β€œin order to,” affect outcomes on land. No one lives in the ocean. A Navy that can’t project power ashore can be irrelevant.
