Trump plans to deny back pay to hundreds of thousands of furloughed federal workers when the government reopens, according to a draft memo from
the White House. The denIal of back pay would violate the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019.

As we all know, Trump never pays his bills.

Let me be clear: It’s ILLEGAL to deny federal workers back pay after a shutdown.

There’s a 2019 law that guarantees it, but Trump is once again trying to break the law.

You don’t get to punish people for doing their jobs just because you’re failing at yours.

Federal employees are guaranteed back pay at the end of any shutdown by law. This is not in question.

That law - the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act - passed nearly unanimously. Speaker Johnson and Leader Thune voted for it. Trump signed it.

Feel free to attribute the following to a former OMB General Counsel: The supposed "new legal analysis" is, to use a technical legal term, horseshit. What the law actually says is that when Congress enacts a law ending a lapse, furloughed employees get paid at the earliest date possible. Period.
