Presented some preliminary results from my first year project today, with my partner and family watching over Zoom. 📊

Can we start over on the whole social network thing?
I would LOVE if someone made a social network that wasn't algorithm-driven and showed me what my friends liked, even if it wasn't relevant to me.
There’s a tall stack of jumbo wooden blocks for kids to play Jenga. I owned a jumbo Jenga set that hadn’t been used yet, and so I printed little psychology-related questions and prompts for kids on some shopping labels and applied them to the blocks. The photo is taken from above, and the three blocks on top have cute little questions on them. The blocks read: What helps you calm down when you’re upset? Who helps you feel safe at home? What’s something nice you’ve done for someone? They were a success!!! Yaaayyy!!! Some of the other prompts included “Show me your ‘angry monster’ walk!” Or “If your feelings were animals, which ones would they be?”. There were 56 unique prompts in total. So cool!
Did some community outreach to let the local community know about the mental health services offered at my department’s in-house clinic.
We also made Feelings Jenga ~ kids loved it!!
Each block had a question or prompt about naming emotions, coping, personal strengths, empathy, family, and more.
I created and printed a page this morning to communicate to people to leave me alone to my work. The top line is written involved and says Luis is on do not disturb! They do not disturb is underlined. Underneath that it reads his busy catching up on his research. Leave a post, or send an email or a text message. OK thanks bye. Then there’s a really big image of the “tough decision” meme, in which the first frame has a hand hovering over two buttons (the two choices are work or chat). The second frame is of a man sweating profusely and clearly stressing the F out over what decision to make. Gotta pick: do I work today or chat instead? Anyway lol. This was placed in my office door for anyone to see who visits my office. Now scram! lol

To help people understand the importance of NIH, share what you’ve used their funding for (in easily understandable terms).
I’ll start: my NIH postdoc funding helped me develop and test AI tools that could identify skin cancer across diverse skin tones.
No doubt it’s a difficult time to be a researcher. An ever tougher time to be a diversity sciences researcher. sigh ~
Fingers crossed that the Minority Fellowship Program I just applied to survives this mess. It’s my dream fellowship 🥲
